Geographers: The Superheroes Who Shape Our Understanding of the World

Date:7 Dhu al-Qi’dah (April 24, 2026)

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Geographical Association Conference 2026, chaired by Catherine Owen, held at Sheffield College City Campus from April 8 to 10, 2026. The theme of this year’s conference was “Geography Makes a Difference,” and it was an incredible experience to gather with such esteemed geographers to discuss the latest developments and challenges in geography education.

I was particularly inspired by the keynote lecture titled “Why Loving the World Makes All the Difference,” where the speaker boldly highlighted how geographers are, indeed, superheroes. At that time, I felt inspired to share this idea in my writing, which captures the essence of what we do. Geographers truly are the superheroes who shape our understanding of the world.

Throughout the event, I engaged in meaningful discussions with fellow geographers, observing their deep commitment to exploring innovative teaching strategies and best practices to incorporate into geography curricula. It was refreshing to connect with passionate individuals dedicated to creating positive change in the field. They wield the power to foster critical thinking in students, enhance their understanding of sustainable futures, sustainability and our environment, understanding of global challenges, politics, cultures, religion, issues of diversity, equality and inclusivity, marine life, global warming, GIS, food geographies, geographies of Music and many more.

I left the conference convinced that geography can indeed make a difference, reaffirming that geographers are superheroes with the unique ability to transform our understanding of the world.

Overall, the conference served as a valuable reminder of the vital role that geography plays in understanding our world.
